Join us for our Christmas Party this year at Highgate Church Hall on Friday 7th December where our High Five Singing Group will be entertaining us with Christmas tunes and we can all join in with the carol singing. Hopefully, our new Line Dancing Group will show us what fun they’re all having on a Monday afternoon. Afternoon tea will be served afterwards. And the price? It’s all free for High Five members – how’s that for value! It starts at 2.00pm so don’t be late – we’ve only 2 hours …
A reminder that our new Line Dancing Class starts on Monday, 14 May in Highgate Church Hall at Stretchgate Lane, Pellon.
This new class is being run by popular request by a number of our members and is being trialled for three months, so please do come along and support us.

We are pleased to announce that, due to the increasing popularity of our Tuesday morning Gentle Exercise Class at Highgate, our Tutor Sue Watson will be starting another class there at the beginning of May.

High Fiver’s were you there? I’m talking about the Staying Well event at the new school on Springhall Lane. If you weren’t you missed treat.
Everyone was so friendly & welcoming. There was info about things you could get involved in or persuade your neighbour to try. The new school/Academy is a place worth seeing. Children sang for us & recited poems about Christmas. We were warmly welcomed by the head. Mmmmmm the food***It was a sight to behold & delicious, especially the spicy offerings.
There was chance to work with the falls prevention team or to try kurling if you haven’t already done so. Sue was there to do taster sessions of “Gentle” exercise. People were surprised that it was much more energetic & focus on prevention than they realised. Well you know Sue & all her enthusiasm!!!
We can truly say that a good time was had by all. A big thank you to the school; to Derek the caretaker who transported all the bags of equipment; to Vicky, Tony, Hayley & their teams & all the folk who contributed to the event. Oh ! and the choirs singing from afar were our own High Five singers under the inspiring baton of Tricia.
When is the next one?
When we wanted to start 2 Pilates classes at the beginning of 2015 we needed money to pay the rent & the only equipment we had was a few donated mats. I had just finished my Pilates training & gained a level 3 CYQ & was raring to go– BUT building up new classes can be slow. We needed funding to take us through the lean months until class fees were equal to the rent bill. We applied to Community Foundation for Calderdale & they gave us all that we asked for. We were able to buy 10 better quality, thicker mats. Older backs have been so grateful for the extra cushioning. We could also make & purchase some promotional material, including 2 small banners which we display each side of the fences at our 2 venues, when it is not raining & windy. Chi balls, which we also purchased, are soft balls which can be used to enhance moves & add challenges to Pilates exercises. They are so versatile that we use them in the 2 Gentle exercise classes which I also teach. Everyone’s favourite is the gentle massage & manipulation the balls can also give, helping sciatica, aching backs, tired feet & more. They have proved very popular & are much used.
So we give CFFC a great big thank you for our grant & a cheer for all the wonderful support they give to big & small voluntary groups, helping us all to make a difference in Calderdale.
No you don’t need a map and compass to know where to go and what to do in High Five. We have newsletters. Leave us your email and we will send you one. We have our wonderful website. We are very proud of of that site. It has taken a lot of work to make it what it is(Thank you Margaret). We have a phone number and email address which you can find else where on this site. What we particularly want to tell you about is a second phone number. This is for finding out about Pilates and Gentle exercise. So there are many ways to access the Famous Five but do remember that we do go to bed and we may go to a concert–so our phones will not be switched on 24/7. Please leave us a message
Now I wonder if there is anyone out there thinking “I could manage a facebook or Twitter account for High Five”. Just dreaming! If we get any more into technology we will have to change our name to ifive. Now there’s a thought.

We meet Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday for all our inspirational, energetic & creative classes.
But Fridays, ah that’s another tale. About once a month we have a get together with a purpose. We have done 2 first aid afternoons with much merriment as well as learning; an afternoon on scams & frauds (very revealling) & we have a members only afternoon tea to come on Friday 20th May with a surprise activity. You can see pictures of the first aid on this website.
What’s to come?
We are fixing up the second part of the talk on scams. Someone suggested a session on healthy eating. Now there’s a mine field! Should we follow it with cream cakes Iced buns & tea?!! We can usually call on our choir to entertain us & lead us in some singing. How about something Scottish? Members if you have any good ideas find a committee member pin him in a corner & pass them on

Every shape and size is right for these classes, it doesn’t matter how much, or how little, you can do. We cater for different levels of fitness and laugh with each other sometimes at our inability to master some moves! Most people will admit to being nervous about going to a “Keep Fit” class, so if you’re worried about coming to your first class on your own, call us to arrange for someone to meet you as you arrive. All our new members say what a friendly bunch of folk we are and how welcome they were made. So what are you waiting for?

Come to our Gentle exercise classes where we do some standing Pilates, some cardio vascular work balance, strength using a variety of equipment & of course we squeeze our pelvic floors
